The recipe of the balsam was created in 1752 by pharmacist Abraham Kunze, and is based on composition of 24 different plants and roots prepared in oak barrels.

There is a legend that Empress Catherine the Great of Russia, became ill during a visit to Latvia, but was cured after drinking Riga Black Balsam.
